Making a difference

June Wiyrick FloresAs June Wiyrick Flores toured Randall Children's Hospital at Legacy Emanuel, she imagined how much easier her husband's hospital experience as a teenager would have been if this family-focused setting existed. When Brian Flores was 16, he was diagnosed with a golf ball-size brain tumor.

You have parents who are a wreck and siblings who are looking at their sibling who is sick—how do you manage that?" June says. "Things are very different now—each room is set up so parents can stay there, and they have family activities for siblings."

Brian's medical journey sparked June's interest and commitment to support Randall Children's Hospital.

"A children's hospital is an important part of the community," she says. "Before I joined the Randall Children's Hospital Foundation board of trustees, I really wasn't educated on the finances for hospital administration, but now I understand that the operating margins are much smaller than I expected."

That's why June, an estate planning attorney, and Brian plan to continue their charitable giving beyond their lifetime using their 401(k) retirement plans.
